Here’s What To Do When Having Your Home’s Roof Replaced

Having your home's roof replaced is an excellent way to improve energy efficiency and save some money on your heating and cooling bills throughout the year. A new roof will also give your house a newer, fresher look that lends well to your property's curb appeal. Here are a few things you should do when it's time for the roof replacement work to start:

Request an Installation Timeline

Whether during your consultation appointment or when scheduling the start of your roof replacement project, it's a good idea to request an installation timeline in writing so you know exactly what to expect while the replacement work is being done. Getting the timeline in writing will help keep your service provider accountable for getting their work done in a timely manner.

You should also find out what days of the week your service provider likes to work – do they only do weekdays or are they willing to work through a weekend to get your project done? Knowing what days your service provider will be working and approximately how long the work will take should give you an opportunity to plan for the workdays so that you and your family aren't too inconvenienced.

Make Plans for the Workdays

When you find out exactly when your service provider and their crew will at your home installing your new roof, you should start making plans away from the home for those days if possible. This will help ensure that your family isn't subjected to loud noises and dangerous construction situations while the work commences.

Try scheduling the work to be done while everyone is at work or school. If that's not possible, plan a day at the park for an afternoon visit or a trip to the movies when your service provider shows up to work. At the very least, send the kids to their friends' houses so they won't be exposed to the dangers of construction and put some ear plugs in if you need to stay home yourself for any reason.

Follow up With an Inspection

Consider having your home's new roof inspected by your service provider a month or so after it gets installed to ensure that no malfunctions or problems are present. If a couple of nails weren't put in correctly and leaks start to develop, the leaks might not be noticed until damage has been done to your home. If a manufacturer defect result in premature roof fading, you should know about it early so the problem can be addressed before the damage is too severe to correct.

These little things can be detected during the inspection so that you don't end up finding out about them a year down the line. An inspection will give you peace of mind in knowing that your new roof is in good shape and that installation was done well.
